![]() Her debut album Lost & Found is a solid first-up effort combining classic soul with contemporary R&B and trip-hop. At times the album loses its shape with some middle of the road filler tracks, however, the quality of the singles and then gem’s such as Fuck It where Bree channels Beck ensures this album is a solid return for one of New Zealand music’s most mysterious songwriters.įave Tracks: Sleepwalking, Valentine, Say You Love Me Too, Fuck Itīritain is swimming with R&B talent at the moment and Jorja Smith is right at the top. Love and relationships are the key themes on this record, with Bree going in deep on songs such as Valentine, one of the songs of the year, and Say You Love Me Too. Sleepwalking is an ode to years gone by, in particular, the 1960s style of singers such as Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. Jonathan Bree’s latest solo album was one of the most anticipated New Zealand records of the year for me and by in large it delivered on the promise of the early singles. If anything, he is the singer/songwriter Morrissey without the political baggage of course, and at this point, he is all set to go down as one of the best songwriters of his generation.įave Tracks: Hangout at the Gallows, Please Don’t Die, Disappointed Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All, We’re Only People (And There’s Not Much Anyone Can Do About That) Yes his lyrics are pretentious and yes at first glance his music could be called dated, but there is just something about Tillman that keeps listeners intrigued. After the success of I Love You, Honeybear and Pure Comedy, God’s Favorite Customer could be his most consistent set of songs yet conjuring up comparisons with the likes of Harry Nilsson and even 70’s John Lennon. This is a musical statement like no other, and at this point in time, I have no worry calling Everything Is Love as the album to beat in 2018.įave Tracks: Summer, Boss, Black Effect, Lovehappyįather John Misty – God’s Favorite Customerįather John Misty is on a great run of albums at the moment with his throwback Californian style of singer/songwriter balladry. It addresses Beyoncé and Jay ‘s past relationship troubles while solidifying their position as music’s power couple. Everything Is Love in many ways is the conclusion of a trilogy which started with Lemonade and 4:44. ![]() Rumours have been circulating for ages about a potential collab album between the two, but I don’t think anyone could have anticipated what has turned out to be a stunning album. The job was so difficult I had to even increase my monthly picks from six to eight, given the quality of releases on display.Īll this considered, below are my top eight albums from the last month of music.īeyoncé is the master of the surprise album drop and she has done it again here with Everything Is Love, this time with husband Jay Z. So many quality albums dropped in June that for once I had to get picky in terms of what to pick for my albums of the month. We are halfway through the music year and June has turned up like nothing else so far in terms of new releases.
